We asked Frank Rothe to select and comment for Camera Lucida one picture (or a series of pictures) from his archive. Here below you can find both the Italian and the English versions.

"Lost in White Nigths" è il mio nuovo progetto in cui provo a realizzare un'opera d'arte unica da una fotografia, in modo che non sia identicamente riproducibile in nessun modo. Dopo anni nella fotografia, iniziavo ad esser un po' stanco dell'idea che è possibile riprodurre un'immagine infinite volte in maniera identica tutte le volte che si vuole. Per il pittore c'è sempre un'opera unica. Così ho deciso di tornare ad una tecnica antica, non più utilizzata, tanto che diventerà presto probabilmente un'arte morta, perchè nel prossimo futuro nessuno sarà più in grado di esercitarla. Mi riferisco alle fotografie colorate a mano. Non si pensi a un software di fotoritocco, mi riferisco alla colorazione manuale.

Ovviamente non sono in grado di farlo da solo, pertanto ho cercato altri artisti che potessero aiutarmi. Mi ricordavo di aver visto un interessante lavoro colorato a mano in una casa di un villaggio indiano qualche anno fa. Dunque cercai qualcuno là. Ho scansito i miei negativi a colori, eliminando il colore in postproduzione e ho inviato via Skype in India gli scatti in scala di grigi. Loro li hanno stampati su carta baritata e hanno colorato a mano la prima immagine rimandandomela qualche giorno dopo. Questo processo è partito quasi due anni fa, appena dopo aver finito di scattare a San Pietrburgo durante le White Nights. Ora sto aspettando l'ultimo pacco dall'India, dovrebbe arrivarmi in uno o due mesi e poi finalmente il progetto sarà ultimato. Dunque è un progetto a lungo termine, ma non a causa mia, ma perchè ci vuole tantissimo tempo a colorare a mano le immagini. A quanto ne so però il colore dovrebbe resistere molto a lungo.

Dunque anche se il progetto Lost in Withe Nights entrerà nel mercato dell'arte con una tiratura di 3-5 copie, ancora non so esattamente, i clienti dovranno avere la pazienza di aspettare la seconda edizione e inoltre non avranno mai l'esatta copia della prima. Mi piace questa idea, perchè, pur essendo un fotografo, ogni tanto mi piace giocare a fare il pittore.

"Lost In White Nights" as I call my new project is my first try to get out a unique masterpiece from a picture, you cant reproduce in the same way anymore. After years in photography I got a little bit bored in the way that you can reproduce an image in the same way for as many times as you want. For painters there will be always only that one master piece. So the way to go back to an old technique that is not used so much anymore and also is a kind of art what is shortly to become a dead art, because nobody is able to do it anymoore within the next future. I´m talking about handcolored images, not colored with the help of photo shop, no hand colored.

Of course I´m not able to do that. So I tried to find people who could help me out. In India I remembered nice handcolored work in some of the village houses I´ve been in. So I tried to find somebody over there. After several months I was successfull and started the work. I scanned my color negatives tooked the color out in photoshop and then sended the black and white scans to India via Skype. The printed it on baryth paper and handcolored the first image. Then sended it back to me. This process started almost two years ago, shorty after I finished the shooting in St. Petersburg during the White Nights. Now I´m waiting for the last package from India, it might arrive in one or two month and then the project will be finished. So its a long term project not because of me, because it takes a long time to hand color images. But as far as I know it will hold for a long time.

So even if the "Lost In White Nights" project of mine will go on to the art market with an edition of 3 or 5 - I dont know yet, the clients have to be pacient to get the second edition delivered and also they will not get the exact copy of the first edition. I like this idea, because as a photographer I want to be a painter too sometimes.
